The Double Bass Creation - Interpretation Studio focusses on new solo repertoire for bass solo and bass with electronics. Improvisation and the development of concepts with and without electronics will be further topics of the studio. Participants will experiment, find new approaches to the instrument and develop solutions for convincing performances. All participants are encouraged to bring pieces and concepts to be further developed in Graz.

There will also be extended support with advanced instrumental techniques as well as solving other technical or performance problems, and we will address aspects such as stage presence and body awareness.

We will also discuss how instrumentalists position themselves in today's new music/improvisation/performance scene and then develop perspectives and strategies on these issues.

Uli Fussenegger, born in Austria in 1966, studied double bass with Franz Dunkler and Ludwig Streicher. After years of freelance concert activity in the field of early music, he became a member of Klangforum Wien in 1987. Many years of intensive collaboration with composers such as Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer, Chaya Czernowin, Bernhard Lang, etc. led to countless solo works for double bass, which Uli Fussenegger premiered. In addition to his international concert activities as a double bass player, Uli Fussenegger works as a composer, improviser and producer with a great affinity for electronics. His work has been documented on over 450 CD and DVD productions to date. He was the dramaturge of Klangforum Wien for over 20 years and is active as a curator in various performative and media formats. This also led to intensive collaboration with the director Christoph Marthaler.

Uli Fussenegger has been a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Course and the impuls Academy since 2002. He has also been a coach at the lucerne academy since 2017. Since autumn 2018, Uli Fussenegger has been Head of Contemporary Music at the Basel University of Music FHNW/sonic space basel.
