HÖREN VERSTEHEN KOMPONIEREN Listening Comprehending Composing Lecture by Clemens Gadenstätter
On the track of me learning what „understanding“ could mean in the process of listening (mainly music, but maybe in nuce all kinds of conscious oral perception) the ideas and results of this creative and artistic research are transfered into compositional stragtegies and technics. This way of defining composition also insists on the idea that only the transition and working on the groundings of sound, perception and meanings of what we percieve could lead to a way of listening which seems to me to be the one that should be focused by music: Listening as the consciouness of listening to something, and the listening has an effect on the body and the consciouness itself that changes the way of listening. This paradox-like loop can be transfered into a specific form of experience in and through composition that takes it jumping-off point directly inside the conditions of human listening, percieving and understanding of this perceptions as a state consciousness in transition. |

The Cold War as Ideological Weapon for Anti-Modernists: Historiography and the Musical Avant-Garde Lecture by Ian Pace
In the last decades a variety of musicologists and historians have drawn upon the paradigm of the cold war to provide a historical explanation for the emergence and growth of the western musical avant-garde. By this paradigm, the Western avant-garde is portrayed in a primarily reactive manner, with musical abstraction and atonality viewed as a direct negation of soviet bloc socialist realism, especially following the Zhdanov decree of 1948. Drawing upon a wide range of archival and other research, Ian Pace challenges many of the foundations and precepts of this argument, and himself argues that this paradigm is little more than a reheated and historically questionable version of antimodernist conservatism. |

Continent Modernity – Lust of Discovery A survey of New Music throughout the world Lecture by Peter Oswald
New music has entered a phase of radical complexity and incalculability. Styles, as we know them from the times of serialism, minimal music or spectral music, do not exist any longer. Thus a survey, a scenario of uncompromising and free temperaments: From the great composers of Germany, such as Lachenmann, Rihm or Nicolaus A. Huber, Switzerland (Furrer, Jarrell, Kyburz) and other international masters, such as Manoury, Francesconi, Mundry, Sciarrino to componsers like Unsuk Chin and the Spanish scene with personalities such as Sotelo, Sánchez-Verdú, Parra or Lascano ... Not to forget Elena Mendoza, Johannes Maria Staud, Bernhard Gander, Heiner Goebbels, Bernhard Lang, Wolfgang Mitterer, Pierre Jodlowski, Yann Robin ...

How to get attention? The presence of contemporary music in the media
Discussion with Reinhard Kager (ARD correspondent), Andreas Kolb (Neue Musikzeitung), Nina Polaschegg (music journalist, musician), Michael Rebhahn (music journalist) a.o. Eva-Maria Stöckler (Donau-Universität Krems), moderation
Krenek did not only try to give new music an adequate status in professional journals like "Musikzeitschrift 23" or "Im Anbruch", published by Universal Edition, but also started heavy discussions in daily newspapers like Frankfurter and Wiener Zeitung about the qualification of contemporary music. How can the presence of contemporary music in the media be supported? How can the topics by the editorial staff, who mostly drop brand new music, be justified? Journalists from Austria and abroad, from print media and radio, discuss the reasons, why contemporary music gets so little attention in the media.
