impuls does not only bring together young composers and interpreters at its International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music, but promotes composers also through the impuls Composition Competition and composition commissions. The new project „Text im Klang“ initiates the intense engagement and combination of music with young literature. A variety of preselected texts and fragments of texts – poems and miniatures, prose and drama – by writers with a close connection to Graz offer initial inspirations for new compositions. Hereby setting words into music in a classical sense, the presence of text and words per se, a musical "translation" including voice or speaker, ... or a mere translation in sound is not the main goal of this project. Much more than that, rhythm, a phrase, syntax, purely formal matters, … or a sound-spoken color could be a starting point and movens for compositional thoughts and realisations. The investigation of the concrete text given, but also the exchange of thoughts with the writers about creative processes and specifics of writers of different media can open up new questions, but also lead to new answers. Another important aspect of this project is the intense processual cooperation with the interpreters, that the new works were written for, they as well can trust on the collaboration with the composers in the process of working on these new pieces.
