Szilárd Benes clarinets Christof Ressi sound, video, programming
Ressi/Benes game_over Ressi/Benes terrain study
Christof Ressi and Szilárd Benes pursue the confrontation of extraordinary psychological states through music and media art. The instrumental sound of the clarinet dynamically interacts with electronics, video and body movement and allows the audience to enter a manifold artistic vision of a landscape of the human soul. Both musicians share a desire for crossing frontiers: Szilárd Benes is constantly seeking to extend the sonic possibilites of his instrument, being inspired by contemporary music, free jazz and also klezmer; Christof Ressi loves to design live-electronic setups and computer programs that allow a spontaneous and direct manipulation of sound and video. Together they are searching for new means of expression, which they trust to find in the confrontation of different media, adhering to a very personal and open-minded definition of music. The pieces are mostly audio-visual concept improvisations focussing on various aspects and forms of musical interplay as well as interaction between different media like sound, image and movement.

Georg Vogel & Gerald Preinfalk Georg Vogel 31-tone clavitone, piano Gerald Preinfalk saxophone
Gerald Preinfalk succeeds in many different worlds. As a long-standing, highly virtuosic member of Klangforum Wien and professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, he is dedicated to classical and new music, composes himself, but is also a highly eloquent improviser and sought-after saxophonist in the Austrian jazz scene, including formations with the exemplary pianist Georg Vogel. Vogel, who has long been known to connoisseurs of the Austrian jazz scene, amongst others, through the formation "Flower", often eludes conventional definitions of style and moves in traditional musical forms just as virtuously as in experimental and contemporary contexts. Especially in the expansion of the rhythmic spectrum and the improvisational handling of it, he is to be granted an exceptional position among pianists and sound researchers. With his self-built microtonal M-Claviton, Vogel also sets new standards, not only in terms of instrumental technology.

In 2021 impuls welcomes not only Schallfeld Ensemble, but also Black Page Orchestra as Ensemble in Residency and Junior Tutor at its Academy. Several special programs and calls for impuls Academy participants have been developed with individual musicians as well as the entire formation. Workshops, readings, rehearsals, presentations and two concerts of the Black Page Orchestra will be realized at the impuls Festival. In the first concert, the orchestra will present repertoire pieces as well as an Austrian premiere by its founding member Matthias Kranebitter. Black Page Orchestra, founded 2014 in Vienna, is an ensemble for radical and uncompromising music of current times. The name derives from Frank Zappa’s composition „the black page“, a piece which score is due to the high density of notes and musical events nearly a black paper. Beside this clear aesthetical approach the ensemble focuses on compositions using electronics, video and different technologies in an artistic context as well as pieces with performative character.
