Piano Preparation Workshop
Workshop for composers and instrumentalists with Andreas Orasch

Andreas Orasch is not only a piano maker, but also a piano tuner at KUG and for pianists such as Markus Schirmer. At impuls he will first give an introduction to preparation methods and possibilities on the piano and then answer all your questions. Please bring along your own works that ask for preparation or also works by other composers with similar specific needs.

Case study Black Page Orchestra

2014 composer Matthias Kranebitter founded the ensemble Black Page Orchestra, that quickly positioned itself in Austria as singular formation in the contemporary music sector at the interfaces of electronics and new technologies, the performative and visual. A balancing act between different art disciplines, and when it comes to opening up to other fields of contemporary music production, is also pursued by the festival Unsafe + Sounds, the ensemble is affiliated with and Kranebitter directed for a long time as well. In his talk Matthias Kranebitter will reveal some of the strategies it took to establish a young ensemble and festival and give an insight look issues such as programming and booking, financing and promotion amongst others.

With a Keen Ear - Examples of own compositions

A central theme of Bauckholt's work is the examination of the phenomena of perception and understanding. Her compositions often blur the boundaries between visual arts, musical theater and concert music. She is especially fond of using noisy sounds, which are often produced by unconventional means (such as extended instrumental techniques or bringing everyday objects to the concert hall). It is important to note that these noises are not just part of some kind of a predetermined compositional structure, but rather they are carefully studied and left free to unfold and develop at their own pace lending the compositions their own unique rhythm.

What is an instrument?

They have always accompanied our making music, transforming it and being transformed by it. As tools, as actors with extraordinary longevity, as specific places of the entire acoustic space.
