Bas Wiegers studied at both Amsterdam and Freiburg conservatories. After a fruitful career as a violinist, in which he covered a broad musical spectrum ranging from historical performance practice to the newest music, he has developed a career as a conductor, maintaining the same broad musical fascination and un-dogmatic orientation that marks him as a violinist.

Bas Wiegers has appeared as a conductor with many ensembles and orchestras, including among others, The Hague Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Gelders Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Athens State Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Guanajuato, Asko|Schönberg, Britten Sinfonia, MusikFabrik, Klangforum Wien, the Nieuw Ensemble and Slagwerk Den Haag.

He worked with many renowned soloists such as Claron McFadden, Cora Burggraaf, Liza Ferschtman, Remy van Kesteren, Eric Vloeimans, Bart Schneemann, Branford Marsalis and Anssi Kartunen, as well as with singer-songwriters Janne Schra (with The Hague Philharmonic), and Wende (with Gelders Orchestra). Also active in the field of opera, Wiegers conducted Mozart’s “Cosí fan tutte” Britten’s "Noye´s Fludde", Poulenc’s "Les Mamelles de Tirésias" and "La Voix Humaine", and Kyriakides’ "An Ocean of Rain".

Wiegers has appeared at various international festivals such as the Gaudeamus Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, London Almeida Festival and Aldeburgh Music Festival. Being very active in the world of new music, Wiegers worked closely together with Louis Andriessen, George Benjamin, Michael Finnissy, Oliver Knussen, Theo Loevendie, Martijn Padding, Klas Torstensson, Klaas de Vries, and many others.

In September 2012, Wiegers worked alongside Peter Eötvös with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as the second conductor in Charles Ives’ Fourth Symphony. He was assistant conductor of the same orchestra under Mariss Jansons in Edgard Varèse’s “Amériques”, and under Susanna Mälkki during the Holland Festival 2012.

In 2009, Bas Wiegers received the grant for conductors from the Kersjes Foundation.

In the 2015-2016 season, Wiegers will conduct the German premiere of the dance opera “Gandari” by Tony Prabowo with the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt. He will also make his debut with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra during the Achtbrücken Festival. Moreover, Wiegers will undertake several return visits to the South Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Gelders Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He will furthermore appear as guest conductor in a series of projects with Klangforum Wien, with concerts in Vienna and abroad. In January 2016, Wiegers will undertake a tour with the Netherlands Student Orchestra to the Netherlands and in Europe.
