Since 2013 Leonhard Garms has mostly been working as free-lance. His engagements led him among other venues to the Opéra Comique Paris, Opéra de Nantes/Rennes, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Korean National Opera, Opéra de Lausanne, Opernhaus Graz as well as to Festivals such as Ruhrtriennale as assistant of Kirill Petrenko, (Wagner: „Tristan und Isolde“) and of Peter Rundel, Wiener Festwochen 2013 and 2015 (as assistant of Beat Furrer and Emilio Pomarico).
Pursuing his great interest for contemporary experimental music he collaborates with different instrumental ensembles: Leonhard Garms conducts Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Phace, The Black Page Orchestra, Soundinitiative (Paris). With these ensembles and as music director of Schallfeld Ensemble Graz Leonhard Garms performs at Festivals such as Wiener Festwochen, Wien Modern, Klangspuren Schwaz, Ultraschall (Berlin), Rainy Days (Luxemburg), Armel Opera Festival in Szeged (Hungary), Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, Brisbane Festival (Australia).
Subsequent to his successful appearances at Graz Oper in 2014, 2015 and 2016, when he conducted Verdi’s „Otello“, „My Fair Lady“, „Opern der Zukunft – So viel mehr an Leben“ and a ballet-premiere with music by Franz Schubert and Isabel Mundry, Leonhard Garms has been invited to premiere Opern der Zukunft again in 2018 and 2021.
